Teaching + Learning Material Design

Design for Kids

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

An objective of this project was to design teaching + learning material for primary standard kids. To be specific, first standard kid in Marathi medium was chosen as a target user.

An outcome of the project is a set of cards communicating – Introduction to Design for Kids (age group 5+). This set of (21) cards is based on the 7 basic elements of design – Line, Shape, Form, Space, Texture, Colour and Value. These elements are examplified with simple visuals on one side of the cards and the word for that visual along with the basic elements on the other side of the cards. The aim is to help kids in better understanding of their surrounding world as these basic elements are present everywhere in surrounding objects. Thus helping kids in recognizing and relating the world around them. The project is guided by Mr. Immanuel Suresh at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

The Concept: The concept is derived from the value of the food as a source of energy. The food gives energy and energy gives life. The Sun is a symbol of energy and life which nourishes the life on the Earth. Here, the visual of the plate represents the Sun and spoons it’s rays. So, this is a bank which provides food/energy and nourishes the life of needy. Orange color is expressing energy and spirit of Gurgaon Food Bank and the green color is symbolizing satisfaction of the hunger.

Study of Icons

Design Research

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Abstract: This was the project based on set of icons used in various digital mediums like cellphone, camera, washing machine and many other online platforms. 5 sets of similar icons had to be collected. They need to be studied for usability, for example 5 different icons for trash can. Similarly had to select at least 5 different sets of other icons. All the people who use/interacts with digital mediums were the target audience for this study.

Introduction: There are thousands of digital icons, we daily use through different digital mediums. Some icons are designed very well and some are not. Some appeals to their function while some are difficult to even recognize. This opinion also differs from person to person. Through this research we tried to understand the deign of the icon, user mind, their observation and perception about the design of the icon. This project was done with my colleague Jishnuram CA under the guidance of Mr. Prabir Mukhopadhyay, IIIT Jabalpur.

Five sets of different digital icons were picked up and studied with the methodology as following :

1

Questionnaire: We made a set of questionnaire on a scale of 1-5 ( 1 = worst, 5 = excellent ) in which we asked the questions about the recognizing icons, likes, observation, preference, colours, ranking etc. Then we went out for the survey with these questionnaire.

2 3 4 5

Direct observation: It was observed that how people deals with these icons, how much time they take to recognize, which appeals them better etc.

Comprehension Test: This is the test done to get the level of understanding. Through the answers of these set of questionnaire we did the comprehension test through rating and ranking for each individual icon.

Critical Confusion Test: This test was done to understand the highest confusion of the viewer towards the icon. Through the questionnaire, we got some unexpected  answers which led that icon to the critical confusion category
like the lock icon   a   was understood as a Indian railway icon.

Results: After doing the survey of the questionnaire, we started doing analysis of the data we got from the answers through survey from which we came up with the results of each individual icon:

11 12

Conclusion: With the results we got, we came up with some important points as following:

> User remembers icon by their visuals

> User tries to connect the real life object to the icon visuals

> Very few users read the text with the icon

> Context does matter in designing the icon, for example the lowest rated icon for Trash b  was designed for western countries, where they use that black plastic bag for trash.
